the plaza is become unsafe. protesters say it has issues before they got there. there has been no official word on when police may move in. live now to kron 4's reggie kumar who is covering "occupy oakland." you are hearing protesters there could be on their way to san francisco? >> reporter: that's right. they were trying to get on the bart station here at frank ogawa plaza but they were unable to because officials closed the bart station. now they are heading down broadway. there is a very light police present following the protesters as they mort down broadway. no indication of where they are going. as you can see inferencing is now down here at the frank ogawa plaza. that was pushed down by the protesters. the city has been saying they do not want the protesters to

stay here at frank ogawa plaza past 10:00 p.m. but the mayor says they can stay here as long as they remain peaceful. look at this video. this is what happened earlier. protesters vowing to take back frank ogawa plaza and they did. 700 gathered holding signs that say opd has blood on their hands, referring to last night's clash. before the gathering many of the protesters pushed down the fencing. the mayor wants to open opdialogue between the city and the protesters. >> i want time to open up communication. i have decided not to have -- have minimum police presence over the next day or so so we can try open up the dialogue. people have to remember why we

had to close to begin with, the sanitation issues. the community who met with me get that, it can't deteriorate to what it was before. i am the mayor of the city that has divided opinions on some things. most of the support, the "occupy wall street" movement we don't always agree on tactics. i know you don't like the thing i look at things day by day. we will do what keeps the most city in the city pleased and safe. more for the public safety. we are not making a battle. we are going to -- >> reporter: [ inaudible question ] >> reporter: again, the protesters are on the move once again on broadway. at this point the city administrator says this is a

biohazard area, very unhealthy because of all the chemicals put down. they don't recommend protesters sleep here tonight. reggie kumar, kron 4 news. a lot of video has been coming out from last night. scott olsen a iraq war veteran was injured, his skull fractured. his video shows scott olsen on the ground after he was hit. many protesters were already retreating but some stayed behind to help him. a police officer can be seen throwing tear gas into the crowd. he served two tours of duty in iraq without injury, today his friends spoke out in front of city hall. >> i think it's uncockable that

children from lake view, these children who are fighting for their rights from marshall, walking to school too long. they need a school. >> talk about $2 million, six schools? doesn't make sense. you already admitted -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: 5 schools were on the chopping block because of low enrollment and low scores. 1,000 students would be impacted and would need to transfer to other schools. alejandra cerball, kron 4 news. the cost of call subject soring. the average yearly price stag for a public university jumped $21,000. today president obama outlined

and back now live to our developing story in oakland. kron 4's reggie kumar standing by with an update on the protesters. >> reporter: they just returned here. look, you can see they are holding american flags, gathered right there in the intersection. police brocked off the street so traffic can't pass through where the protesters gathered in the intersection. i talked to one police officer, he told me they were trying to get to fran but like i mentioned, bart did shut down its stations so they were unable to get on. so they are standing there, waiting and talking about their next move. i have not had a chance to talk to them about what they are planning to do. >> thank you for the update. we will take a quick break and be right back. push for the jobs plan. >> one thing that sometimes hasn't occurred in the past is the president saying the same thing over and over and over again. repetition matters in politics. he is out there selling the jobs plan and giving people a real understanding he has a direction for the country in terms of not just jobs in the short term but rebuilding the country's strength for the longs term. that's very important. >> reporter: right now the president has a chance to define his message before there is a republican nominee. >> important part of what the president is doing. >> reporter: drawing a contrast for republican plans. >> wait a minute, i got to talk about the future. how are we going to create jobs. >> reporter: one republican thinks it's already too late.
